2022 – 2023 Concert Season

Members Program

Wednesday, March 4, 2023

The Matinée Musicale Members Program was held on March 4, 2023, at 11:00 am at the Faith Presbyterian Church, 6434 Corbly Road, Cincinnati, OH 45230. Administrative Director Judy Martin welcomed and thanked everyone for coming here despite a last minute location change.

The musical part of the event featured Marjorie Fryxell on the piano playing Franz Schubert's Impromptu in F Minor, op. 142, no. 1, D935. Next, Karen Kruse, cello, and Janelle Gelfand, piano, performed Beethoven's Cello Sonata in A Major, op. 69, no. 3, 1st Movement, Allegro ma non troppo, followed by "Oblivion" by Astor Piazzola.

Next, Charlyn Jackson, soprano, and Toni Sheffer, piano, performed several songs by Tom Benjamin and Xavier Montsalvatge, followed by French horn player Laurel Hinkle and Toni Sheffer, piano, in "A Hero's Prayer" Duo for Horn and Piano by composer Rick Sowash, who happened to be in the audience!

Then, two of the many Matinée Musicale grant recipients spoke about their non-profit organizations used the funds. Samuel Martin, founding artistic director of Cincinnati Song Initiative, told us a history of his organization and how they produce Art Song recitals. Then Carmen Greiner, executive director of Cincinnati Boychoir, spoke about their three core ensembles for boys in grades 3-12, plus their Festival Choir event.

Board member Nancy Bailey talked about the remaining recitals in our 2022-2023 season, holding up a poster of the last two events. Then Emily Hodges, longtime MM member, informed us about a series of Beethoven piano sonata recitals at UC-CCM. Finally, we all moved to the Social Room to enjoy our box lunches from Apple Spice Catering.
