Members of Matinée Musicale Cincinnati met at Faith Presbyterian Church for a fascinating and diverse program and lunch. Administrative Director Judy Martin welcomed us and introduced our guest presenter, member Jill Munoe Fankhausser, who gave a university-worthy lecture about the development of baroque music and an analysis of the aria "Dido's Lament" from the opera "Dido and Aeneas" by Henry Purcell. Then, she and her sister Mimi Kate Munroe, mezzo-soprano, performed this hauntingly beautiful song.
Next, musicians and educators from the Immanuel School of Music in Kentucky performed a variety of works ranging from Bach to Led Zeppelin, to demonstrate how the school provides musical education and training thanks to the grant it received by Matinée Musicale. First, Julie Geiman, ISM Education Director, and Jimmy Rinehart, ISM guitar instructor, performed three guitar duets from Baroque composers. They then did a set of four songs representing American folk music, bluegrass and rock music, including "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin.
Next, Julie's daughter Melissa joined her mother to perform "Haunted" a Bossa Nova style jazz piece with Melissa singing and playing violin, and Julie on the drums. Julie then performed a solo piano piece, "Etudes", by Stephen Heller.
To round up the program, Julie introduced Danny Hinson, one of her drum students in her Alzheimer program, to perform with them in "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music". Members of audience were so moved that many were dancing in the aisles and gave them a standing ovation!
We then adjourned to the Fellowship Hall to enjoy a tasty box lunch!
